Senior Downstream Processing Engineer

As a senior downstream processing engineer you will take a leading role in the downstream processing team and report directly to the VP of Commercialization and Process Development. In this position you will work closely with the fermentation team to purify small molecules away from fermentation broth via a commercially viable and scalable approach. As a senior downstream process engineer you must be highly competent in new method development and the use of industry standard engineering operations such as:

  • Tangential flow filtration (microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration)
  • Continuous and batch centrifugation (e.g. tubular bowl, disk stack)
  • Using temperature and pH changes to selectively isolate desired product(s)
  • Normal flow filtration (batch and continuous)
  • Cell disruption
  • Extractions, wash steps, and removal of impurities
  • Column chromatography
  • Solids drying (e.g. drum drying, spray drying)

The successful candidate will implement processes to recover of our fermentation and cell-free products. You will execute parallel laboratory and pilot experiments to optimize key process parameters required to meet product specifications. You will use experimental design such as DOE and perform data analysis to understand the tradeoffs between process parameters and key performance indicators, as well as effectively perform such experiments in a scale relevant manner. You will troubleshoot equipment and process issues and implement corrective actions. We need the person to apply creative problem solving to improve laboratory operations and collaborate and communicate effectively with internal teams. The ideal candidate will also be highly proficient in:

  • Working with the analytical team for impurity analysis
  • Demonstrated scaling success for a fermented small molecule
  • Worked on volumes from bench scale to 5000L
  • Problem solving engineering equipment for downstream processing

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in industrial downstream processing
  • Can lead small molecule isolation from fermentation and enzyme processes while enabling enzyme recycle where applicable
  • Can lead downstream unit operations and optimization of each process
  • The ability to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and adaptable
  • Motivated by a sense of urgency, attention to detail, and an engrained penchant for professional development of themselves and their co-workers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Must be willing to work non-standard hours supporting a 24/7 operation including weekends
