Director of Biotherapeutics

Debut is looking for a Director of Biotherapeutics to spearhead our entrance into the biopharmaceutical market alongside a world-class partner. The successful candidate will lead a multi-disciplinary team harnessing Debut’s cell-free platform to rapidly produce biologics, including antibodies, on demand. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), post-translational modifications (PTMs), and assay development. The goal of this program is to harness continuous manufacturing systems and cell-free biocatalysis to create vital medicines on demand in the USA. This is biotherapeutics on-demand.

What you will be doing:

  • Build and lead a team of scientists and research associates to execute on a rapid program.
  • Seek technical and operational input from key stakeholders to build a project and execution plan.
  • Track and oversee project direction, aligning with milestones and priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with our partners in San Diego to drive cutting-edge R&D.
  • Create core technology and methods to generate the desired therapeutics in a cell-free manner.
  • Utilize cross-functional technologies from Debut and our partners to produce biologics.
  • Mentor and train junior scientists, ensure best practices in the lab and in record keeping.

What you bring to the table:

  • A Ph.D. in biochemistry, biotherapeutics, biological medicinal chemistry, or biology, and 10+ years of industrial R&D biotherapeutic experience with a focus on monoclonal antibodies.
  • Experience in post-translational antibody modification.
  • Experience in the utilization of organelles for post-translational modifications.
  • Experience in assay design for testing antibody efficacy and the effects of specific post translational modifications.
  • Experience in continuous manufacturing and enzyme use in biotherapeutics.
  • Expert in mammalian cell culture and problem solving.
  • Creativity, problem-solving skills, and a detail-oriented work ethic.
  • An industrial track record of leading a biotherapeutics team with a focus on mAbs.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated multidisciplinary team cooperation.
  • Quick learner with the ability to be flexible and adapt to new challenges.
  • Experience in glycan biochemistry, monoclonal antibody glycan modeling and remodeling.

Other:

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be willing to work with biohazardous agents (up to BSL2).
  • Work requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard and office equipment. Laboratory operations require dexterity and care to perform studies as required.
  • The R&D laboratory will result in exposure to hot and cold temperatures, noise, fumes, limited dust, and oily coolants.
  • Requires walking, climbing stairs, bending and occasional lifting of material up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • The performance of this position will present exposure to an industrial environment and requires support and compliance with the published Company PPE policy including but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields, appropriate attire, safety shoes, hard hat, hearing protection, etc.
  • Must be willing to work non-standard hours supporting a 24/7 operation including weekends.
